Grades 6-8

General School Administrative Policies
Students are to be in their first period classroom at 8:44 am, seated and ready for class. Students will be dismissed at 3:00 pm.  Students not under the supervision of a teacher from 3:00-4:00 pm must leave the school building and school grounds at dismissal. Those students waiting for parents must do so at the Gatekeeper’s office at Door #3. Students may be also coming in on the early run for detention from 7:40-8:40 am.

Attendance
Regular attendance is essential to the learning process. If you are not legitimately ill or have another valid excuse, you are expected to be at BMC on time each day of school. Students will be given a “Day Pass” at the beginning of each day to carry from class to class in the event he/she needs to go to a different classroom, bathroom, gym, office or other places throughout the school. Teachers will need to sign the pass before the student goes elsewhere. If a student loses the pass, he/she will not be able to go to other places that day, except during changes of classes. Teachers may give permission for a student to leave in an emergency.

Absences
If a student is absent from school, the parent should telephone the attendance officer at school to explain the absence. Upon their return, it is required that they present a written and signed excuse from the parent or guardian for each absence.
A student who is absent from school may not participate in any school activity on that day. The attendance officer will contact the parent or guardian of the absent student for safety reasons as well as attendance reasons. At the discretion of the teacher, students are responsible for making up missed work. It is then necessary to make arrangements for missed work.

Tardy/Late
Students who are late should report to the Gatekeeper to sign in. The second time tardy, a warning will be given. The third tardy, one night detention will be assigned. This information will be sent to the High School office and the Supervisor of Attendance.

Excused
Students who are to be excused during the school day for a legitimate reason must bring a note from home to the office BEFORE HOMEROOM indicating the reason and time to be dismissed. Students are responsible for missed work. If a student knows ahead of time they will be absent, please make arrangements to get the work. Students will be released from the Gatekeeper’s Office by Door #3.

Truant
A student who does not attend school for unlawful reasons is truant. Consequences will be forthcoming.

Supplies
Students are expected to report to all classes with the appropriate textbook, notebook, paper and pencil or pen. All students must have their agenda or planner with them for all classes and study halls. Assignments must be entered into the agenda.

Lockers
Students will be provided a hall locker. This locker is school property and is subject to inspection at any time. Make sure your locker is securely locked at all times. You are responsible for school items issued to you. DO NOT GIVE OTHER STUDENTS YOUR COMBINATION FOR ANY REASON. YOU MAY NOT SHARE LOCKERS. Do not leave money or other valuables in your locker under any circumstances. The school district does not assume any responsibility for objects or valuables stolen from your locker.
If for any reason you must bring money to school, it may be left in the office for safe keeping. School lockers are the property of the BMC school district and under law are subject to search if circumstances warrant it.

Title IX Statement
It is the policy of the Board of Education of the Brushton-Moira Central School District to abide fully by the requirements of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 that no person within its jurisdiction will, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination in any education program, athletics, and employment activities operated by the Board of Education.
Notification of Rights pursuant to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
This is to inform you of your rights with respect to student records pursuant to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of student records. The law gives parents and students over the age of 18 years of age (referred to in the law as “eligible students”) the following rights:
1. The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day a district receives a request for access. Parents or eligible students should submit to the Building Principal a written request that identifies the records they wish to inspect. The Principal will make arrangements for access and notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected.
2. The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or eligible student believes is inaccurate or misleading. Parents or eligible students may ask the district to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading by writing the Principal, clearly identifying the part of the record they want changed and specifying why it is inaccurate. If the district decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or student, the district will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible student when notified of the right to a hearing.
3. The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the school district as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the school board; a person or company with whom the district has contracted to perform a special task (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assigning another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility. Upon request, the district discloses education records without consent to officials of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll.
4. The right to file a complaint with the US Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the district to comply with the requirements of FERPA. Contact:
